Police uncovered a man’s cannabis plant after catching a strong whiff of the drug.
Officers went to Jay Abrams’ flat in Forton Road, Gosport, for an unrelated matter. When the 20-year-old shop worker opened the door they could smell the cannabis straight away.
The police searched his property and found the plant in his bedroom. As well as the plant police found a safe containing £1,700 and two small bags of cannabis.
When questioned he told them he was a user who sold cannabis to his friends to fund his habit.
Judge Ian Pearson said: ‘This was an arrangement which had some element of sophistication in it. It was a well set-up operation but there was only one plant involved. The drugs you would have yielded would have been modest. There was no significant element of profit.’
He added: ‘These offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence may be justified for them, but I am of the view that I can impose such a sentence and suspend it.’
At Portsmouth Crown Court Abrams pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a class B drug with intent to supply and one of producing a class B drug.
He was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work in the community. The judge ordered that the money found had to be handed over.
